Top to bottom, end to end whole car subway advertisements covering the exterior sides of the train except for the windows. It is the same advertisement for Jaguar automobiles on every car of the train, with a huge British flag right in the middle none the less, in NY! I am wondering when NYC is going to get it together and start commissioning artists to do artwork on the subway trains. The ugly, austere sardine cans on wheels that are the NYC subway trains are now being made to look even more butt by being covered with advertisements, come on now! Let's do better than this NYC. https://joe-egan-com.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=189263502 189263502 2/8/14 a new painting of mine titled "NY Winter Nights" acrylic paint, and oil paint on wood panel, 12 by 12 inches https://joe-egan-com.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=189301193 189301193 2/9/14 this is a new painting of mine titled "Grappling with Miro" acrylic paint, oil paint, and spray enamel on wood panel, 12 x 12 inches https://joe-egan-com.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=189327738 189327738 2/10/14 this is a new painting of mine "Night Waves" acrylic paint, oil paint, and spray enamel on wood panel, 12 x 12 inches https://joe-egan-com.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=189373061 189373061 2/11/14 one more from the Richard Serra show at Gagosian. https://joe-egan-com.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=189408688 189408688 2/12/14 the geometry of the architecture in this picture is fascinating to me. It is in the Southwest area of Bulgaria. He lived in this hut which was built into a cave for 50+ years in the tenth century. He gathered such a following that they built a huge monastery at the base of the mountain in the tenth century. The monastery has been destroyed and rebuilt many times over the centuries due to the Ottoman empire and the long history of war in Bulgaria as the country is the crossroads between Europe and Asia, and close to Russia amidst the Balkans. The Rila monastery and the St. Ivan hut will make up the images of the next couple days. https://joe-egan-com.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=189505205 189505205 2/15/14 This is the side of the main dwelling area of the St. Ivan hut and you can also see storage rooms built into the cave in the back. https://joe-egan-com.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=189535639 189535639 2/16/14 this is the main chamber in the St. Ivan cave hut which is only 12 x 12 feet. Bulgarian people also hang these little notes from trees. https://joe-egan-com.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=189600883 189600883 2/18/14 This is the Rila monastery aka base camp for the St. Ivan hut. It struck me as more of a fortress as it had fortifications complete with dwelling chambers surrounding the courtyard area. One entrance in the front, and one at the rear. This image is taken from the front entrance tunnel looking into the courtyard where the church is, which is the building with the contrasting black and white tiles. There is also a large bell tower next to the church which was used for religious purposes but also as a warning signal. Supposedly the bells can be heard for almost 25 miles and were often used to warn of approaching raiders as the monastery is in a strategic position amidst a pass in the Rila mountains. https://joe-egan-com.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=189634937 189634937 2/19/14 This is one of the many frescoes that cover the interior of the arched exterior of the church at Rila monastery. At first I thought wow somebody really made these and plastered them all over the place, and while making this a pic of the day may seem kind of brash I got a chuckle out of the fact that somebody had actually removed one of the "#fuck it and whatever" pull tags at the bottom of the sign. The most amazing aspect of Istanbul to me is the history of the different cultures that have been present there. An excellent example of this is the Hagia Sophia and it is evident in the Byzantine architecture with the dome and arches as well as the artwork. The Byzantine angelic figures in the corners, and the Arabic script in the central ring at the apex of the dome. The aesthetic of the calligraphy in that script is quite interesting to me. https://joe-egan-com.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=190164183 190164183 3/8/14 people fishing off of the Galata bridge in Istanbul. https://joe-egan-com.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=190193951 190193951 3/9/14 Istanbul-I kept thinking of the J.R.R. It is not a necessity for me to appreciate a piece. This painting by Dali at his museum is the epitome of the close up and at a distance viewing relationship. The vision that Dali exuded using the combination of representation, the female figure up close, and abstraction, the portrait of Abraham Lincoln perceivable from a distance is astounding. You should be able to see the portrait of Lincoln if you step a few feet back from your computer. Not only that but due to the color relationship of the squares within the mosaic pattern when you move towards and away from the piece, and side to side while viewing it the colors appear to shift.
